"Search Engine Optimization" (referred to as "SEO") is work that you undertake to "tweak" your website so that search engines like Google and Yahoo! rank you higher when people search for things that are related to your business. SEO works are invaluable if successful for three major reasons:
- Most people under 35 don't use yellow pages or white pages anymore - they go straight to www.google.com or www.yahoo.com. If they don't find you, they'll find a competitor.
- You can pay to have classifieds show up in search engine rankings - advertisements for your website, but people know the difference between a "real" result and a paid result
- A successful SEO campaign yields new customers passively - you don't have to go out and market, people find you and contact you to do work (if your website is quality and satisfies them that you are worth calling).
